Bulgarian Food Bank Establishes Long-term Cooperation Agreements

Bulgarian Food Bank (BFB) signed long-term cooperation agreements with the Bulgarian Food Safety Agency and Societe Generale Expressbank. The agreements aim to support the work of the Food Bank, which is backed by over 30 leading companies, government and social organisations. 

The nonprofit and legally distinct organisation was founded with a mission to provide year-round and long-term nutritional support via food bank’s model based on standards and best practices of efficient food banks in nearly 50 countries. BFB is the first organisation in Bulgaria established specifically to develop a professional infrastructure and capacity for effective and systematic nutritional support through large-scale mobilization of donated resources.

BFB will work to collect a good and healthy food from retailers, distributors, manufacturers. This will be done through a system that ensures proper storage, control, transportation and accountability. Food will be provided to social organisations and through them it will be reached to more people in need.

The main task of BFB will be to negotiate donations of food in a way to ensure their preservation and control quality. Bulgarian Food Bank going to start working in Sofia, but will seek opportunities to create infrastructure throughout the country.

’The main BFB goal has is its development as a sustainable system of food and by 2018 to provide support to more than 300,000 people. The actual launch of the BFB depends on the provision of infrastructure, financial resources and organisations which could organise the daily distribution of food’, said the chief executive of BFB Mrs Marina Brakalova.
 

The society must use available resources to reduce the gap between wasted food products and people who really need them, shared the founders of the organisation among which is Bella Bulgaria. Their goal is BHB to become an organisation which will be working as an effective national instrument to reduce hunger in Bulgaria and unnecessary waste of food.

The Bulgarian Food Bank’s activities relies on best practices and experience in food banking for 40 years in over 40 countries worldwide. The organisation will be certified by the European Federation of Food Banks and the Global Food Banking Network in respect of the implementation of all applicable standards.

Bulgarian Food Bank has been established as a result of the work of the Bulgarian Food Banking Planning Forum. Within the Forum a consensus for the benefits of the system for the entire society was made among the public, business and civic sector. The concept of establishment, organisation, structure and key strategies of Bulgarian Food Bank Foundation has been discussed and consolidated between more than 30 governmental, business and civis organisations.

All participants in the Bulgarian Foodbanking Planning Forum have contributed significantly for the establishment of the Bulgarian Food Bank as an official organization.
